A War Like No Other (Part IV)

Many years ago I had the privilege of firing the 3-inch gun of a Canadian Firefly Sherman tank at the Meaford tank range in Ontario. I found that even with WWII optics, I could hit any object I could see. Since the gun had an effective range of 1.5 kms and a maximum range of 10.5 kms, this could be a very long way away indeed. I mention this because guns and optics have improved a lot since 1945 and presumably Russian gunners today can now lob shells through windows many miles away. Even so, this distance isn’t enough. The American Javelin Anti-Tank missile has an effective range of between…

A War Like No Other (Part III)

A War Like No Other (Part II)

The Ukraine army was prepared for Russia with modern weapons, Manpads (Man Portable Air Defence Systems) and MPATS (Man Portable Anti Tank Systems). That’s why it spread strongpoints all over the countryside so that an attack on any one of them would be enfiladed from either side. Since the effective range of MPATS, like the British NLAW (Next Generation Light Anti Tank Weapon) is a thousand metres, these strong points are quite far apart. After the shocking discovery of how vulnerable tanks and aircraft were to these weapons in the first stages of the war, the Russian military completely changed its tactics. First, it switched to cruise missiles for high…
